Skincare is a crucial part of self-care, and a daily routine can help maintain a healthy complexion. But, the world of skincare can be overwhelming for beginners, with a plethora of products, brands, and routines to choose from. In this blog, we will guide you through the process of starting a home skincare routine, focusing on budget-friendly and skin-friendly options.
The Importance of Quality Skincare Products
One cannot stress enough the importance of investing in quality skincare products. Such products are formulated with ingredients that provide nourishment to the skin without causing harm. They also have a higher efficacy compared to cheaper alternatives. Typically, a little goes a long way. So the product that may have cost more will likely last you twice as long as a cheaper alternative. However, buying high-quality skincare products can sometimes be daunting due to the price tag, but it doesn't have to be scary or overwhelming.
Starting with a Double Cleanse
The first step in your skincare routine should be a double cleanse. This process involves an oil cleanser followed by a gel, foam, or cream cleanser. The oil cleanser is applied to dry hands and face, this step breaks down oil, dirt, and makeup. You can spend a quick minute on this step or several minutes. Focus on clogged areas or the nose if you deal with pesky blackheads. Following this, the second cleanser is used right over the top of the oil cleanser. This step removes the oil, dirt, and makeup that the oil has broken down. This should be done every night. If your skin tends to be oily you may benefit from a double cleanse in the am as well. If your skin is dry/dehydrated or simply still clean from the pm cleanse then skip the am double cleanse. We don't want to strip your skins natural barrier especially if your barrier is compromised.
Remember, when introducing a new product into your skincare routine, it's important to give your skin a minimum of 3-4 months to adjust. Sometimes a purge (breakout) might occur initially, but this is a normal process as your skin adjusts to the new product.

Adding Exfoliation to Your Routine
Once your skin is comfortable with the double cleanse, the next step is to introduce exfoliation into your routine. Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, promoting a fresh and radiant complexion. Rule of thumb, you have as many dead layers of skin as you are years old. So, If you are 40 years old and don't exfoliate, you can have around 40 layers of dead skin cells built up before your body starts shedding them naturally. Think about that...how much of those quality skincare products are being absorbed? They have to make their way down through 40 layers of dead skin cells. This is why it is so important to exfoliate as we age. Start with once a week and gradually build up to 2-3 times a week. The process is similar to introducing any new product: start slow, be consistent, and give your skin time to adjust.

Introducing a Mask, Moisturizer, and Serum
After your skin has adjusted to the double cleanse and exfoliation, it's time to incorporate a mask, moisturizer, and serum that address your specific skin concerns. Masks provide intense hydration and nourishment, moisturizers lock in hydration, and serums are targeted treatments for specific skin concerns like acne, pigmentation, or aging.
Remember, the key to a successful skincare routine is consistency and patience. It might take a while to see results, but with regular care and the right products, you will eventually start to see improvements in your skin's health and appearance. When you look good you feel good.
